FAQs: LASER HAIR REMOVAL

How does laser hair removal work?

Our advanced state of the art laser uses a concentrated beam of light to target your unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by melanin (the dark pigment in the hair follicle) and then creates heat. This heat then neutralises the hair follicle, disrupting how it works and preventing hairs from growing again. All the hairs in the Anagen growth stage will then have been targeted and neutralised.

What type of laser do you use?

We have the Motus AY from Lynton. It is one of the state of the art laser machines currently on the market and costs as much as a new A-Class car. It is a true laser, not a diode laser or IPL. The alexandrite laser is currently the golden standard for hair removal. It also has an Ndyg attachment.

Is it really pain free?

Yes! Our Laser has the Moveo Hand piece attachment too which has a special sapphire crystal, which cools down the skin whilst simultaneously treating. This makes it painless and much safer. With other lasers you have to cool with an ice pack before and then straight after, but you cannot cool during the actual treatment. If you had treatment previously you will know it is quite sore, especially in the facial and intimate areas or for a 2 hour appointment such as full legs.

Are the consultation and patch test free?

Yes! We do require a £10 deposit to book your appointment, which can be put towards treatment or refunded back to you on the day of the appointment, if treatment is not suitable for example.

What happens during the free consultation and patch test?

It is an insurance requirement that all clients are patch tested before any treatment commences. The reason for this is to check how the skin reacts to treatment and we can prevent any unwanted reactions.

We will explain in more detail how laser hair removal treatment works. We will discuss your requirements and determine your skin type. The laser patch test helps us decide on the best laser settings for you.

You will receive a message from us shortly after to check how your skin is feeling/looking after the patch test as your safety is a priority for us.

How many sessions do I need?

On average we see a 75-90% reduction in hair growth after a full course of treatment. The fastest skin/hair type is Caucasian skin with dark brown hair. This is because we can program the laser at a higher setting, which makes it more powerful.

We recommend 8+ sessions on body areas and 12+ sessions on facial areas. Not all clients will respond the same; therefore, this process will be different for everyone. Essentially, each of your hairs has its own growth cycle and will affect the number of treatments needed.

How often are the sessions?

Treatments should be booked at least 4 weeks apart for facial laser and 6 weeks for body laser. This will allow the hairs to go through the growth stages.

How do I prepare for my laser treatment?

Please SHAVE the treatment area the day/night before, as this will allow the laser to go directly to the hair follicles. Ensure the area is free from make-up, perfume, deodorant and moisturiser. Use of sun-beds/ exposure to sunlight in the treatment area MUST be avoided, so there is no active tan. Also no fake tan is allowed. If there is a change in medication, we must know prior to your appointment. Please inform us within 48 hours if you need to change your appointment and there will be no charge.

How does your hair growth cycle work?

Your hair will go through different hair growth stages throughout your treatment: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Laser hair removal is ONLY effective in the Anagen stage. And only 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth stage, so multiple treatments are needed for laser hair removal to be effective for long-term results.

Is it permanent?

No, it is not permanent-permanent. Laser treatment neutralises the hair follicles so no more hair will grow from those follicles. But no hair removal treatment can remove 100% of your hair permanently as your skin will grow new follicles over time.

What are the side effects?

Like most medical treatments, there is always the possibility of side effects.

However, we will always try our very best to prevent this from happening.
We do have the Motus AY, which is one of the safest machines and thankfully we have very few reported side effects.

We ALWAYS provide an after-care sheet during your consultation and patch test for you to refer back too. It is VERY important for you follow our aftercare advice closely as this can have a huge impact on possible side effects occurring.

Can we treat all skin types (1-6)?

Yes! We can treat all skin types 1-6. We will determine your skin type during your consultation and patch test and use this information accordingly in a SAFE and EFFECTIVE way.

What is the minimum age for laser treatment?

At Bedford Cosmetic Laser, the client should be a minimum age of 18 years. Most clinics and salons will not be insured to treat under 18’s due to variable change in hormone levels during puberty.

Does laser hair removal work on blonde/fair hair?

We do have blonde clients. However, we will need to make sure if there is enough pigment in the hair for the laser to be beneficial. The free consultation and patch test would probably be the best route to find out if it would work for your hair.

Do you do maintenance treatments?

Yes! The best is to book your free consultation and let the technician have a look at the treatment area. Often we find that clients only have patches of hair returning, so we would lower the full price for that area if this is the case.

Follow-up treatments can eliminate new hair growth, which can occur from hormonal conditions or changes, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome etc.

What can I not do when having laser treatment?

Care should be taken to avoid trauma to the treated area for 5 days afterwards. Avoid strenuous activities, massages, sauna and steam, excessively hot baths/showers etc.

Wash and bathe as normal but take cooler showers rather than hot baths. The skin should be patted dry and not rubbed.

It is very important to use sunscreen (SPF 50+) and protect the area from sunlight as much as possible for 4 weeks pre and post treatments. Do not use sun-beds either. Failure to do this can lead to sunburn, burns (potential scars) and hyper-pigmentation.

Make-up can be applied, if the skin is not sore or broken. However, we advise caution if the area is feeling sensitive. Remove make-up carefully as rubbing the skin can cause irritation or infection.

Who is not suitable for treatment?

Like with most medical treatments there can be possible contra-indications which can prevent treatment. For example:

– Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
– Patients with Cancer
– Epilepsy (Recent seizure in the last 12 months)
– Lupus
– Psoriasis/Eczema (in the treatment area)
– Skin Pigmentation Disorder E.G. Melasma/Vitiligo

We recommend a consultation with your technician to ascertain if the treatment will be suitable/successful for you.

What training did your laser technicians receive?

We are very lucky that all our technicians were directly trained by the laser’s manufacturer Lynton, including the core of knowledge training. We are paying for Lynton’s ongoing support and therefore we have the privilege of contacting the manufacturer directly any time with queries and they are excellent at answering.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that sometimes you are unable to make your appointment. Therefore, within 48 hours of your scheduled appointment you will receive two appointment reminders, one via SMS and one via Email. We require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice. If less notice is given a missed appointment charge of £40 will be taken (off your investment or your deposit).

Where are you located? Do you have parking available?

How long do I need to wait after c-section to have treatment?
